The essential idea is leadership, safety, and oversight during a firing mission. The Gun Commander is the person who directs the gun crew, keeps the operation under safety control, and supervises the entire firing mission as it’s directed. This role means overseeing the sequence of events from setup to firing, ensuring everyone understands the plan, and verifying that safety protocols are followed at every step. The Gun Commander has the authority to approve or halt actions, authorize the command to fire, and manage any safety concerns that arise, coordinating with the rest of the team to keep the mission on track. Other duties like planning logistics and supplying rounds, operating the range finder and calibrating equipment, or maintaining medical readiness are handled by dedicated specialists, but they’re not the primary responsibility of the Gun Commander.
